CJ480 Southern New Hampshire Warner Robins GA Community Agency Discussion by ella | Mar 17, 2023 | Uncategorized Description Describe your capstone project’s findings and explain how the agency will implement any changes based upon your work. Share your thoughts on the capstone experience with your classmates. What do your capstone experiences have in common? What reasons explain the differences in your capstone? How will you use what you learned from this experience in your future career?Peer 1 The City of Colorado Springs has experienced a rise in violent criminal activity over the last 7 years. I discovered that the majority of the violence occurs in the central part of the city, in a specific area, and the farther away from that area citizens move, the more expensive it is to live. As a possible answer to this issue, I discovered a program that has helped in the City of Detroit, which we all know is one of the most dangerous cities in the United States. The DPD, along with MSU, developed a data analysis program that has been used to compile data and turned into a smartphone application that allows law enforcement professionals to access the database in real-time. The database tracks the instance of crime, both violent and non-violent, as well as the gang activity in Detroit, and any connections are used to prevent crime while officers are out on patrol and dealing directly with the public. In my capstone project, I proposed that the City of Colorado Springs implement a similar program that would allow for compilation of data, allowing qualified data analysists to mine the information for anything that would link the trends and allow law enforcement to predict trends and prevent criminal activity in real-time.Although I really struggled with gaining communication with the agency, I was able to find the information I needed to compile my research and submit a massive paper on the causes and effects of violent criminal activity, as well as all of the other elements that were assessed on the final (minus a few pieces because of time limitations).I think the one thing I can take away from this is the fact that communication is key. Reaching out early and often is going to help me be the most effective researcher and advocate possible.Peer 2The City of Chicago has an issue with illegal firearms being brought into the city via a straw purchase. A straw purchase is when an individual goes out and purchases an item for another in which that person cannot legally purchase on their own. In Illinois you must posses a state issued Firearm Owner Identification Card (FOID) and pass a background check. If you do not meet these two requirements, out of many, then you cannot legally purchase or posses a firearm. It has been found that 95% of cases, the CPD were able to identify that the possessor of the firearm was not the original purchaser. This was based the federal record of the initial purchase of the firearm (Knighton, T.). The biggest issue that the Chicago Police Department has is those individuals being held accountable. In one particular case an individual was arrested on 4 felony counts of making a straw purchase. In Illinois, each violation carries up to a 3 year prison sentence, if you purchase more than 2 firearms its a class 1 felony with a sentence of up to 15 years. This individual plead guilty to 4 felonies and was sentenced to 15 days work release, 12 months probation, and had to pay a fine of $679 (Washington, B.). There is no real deterrent for these individuals to not commit the act of making a straw purchase. This makes it difficult on the CPD. They do partner with different organizations such as churches, pro sports teams, and others to create organizations for the youth. They have established youth organizations to keep the youth busy and hopefully off the streets committing crimes. They also hold events such as “feed the block”. This invites all people to get together and socialize. This is a few attempts that are being made to help educate the public and reduce crimes in the city.
