Topic: Critically analyze the role of the teacher (your role) in making inclusive
education a reality in your classroom and school.
The essay will be divided into two sections:
In the first section describe a time during your primary, high schooling or university education
where you were excluded because of one reason or intersecting reasons: your gender, disability,
a specific learning difficulty, medical/ health difficulties socio- economic reasons, race, language
etc. Alternatively, maybe you were the one perpetuating the exclusion(s).
(400 words max)
In the second section, referring to the social and medical models of inclusion, learner
differences, the Elizabeth Walton (2011) article, guidelines for responding to learner diversity
and the ways we have been re-framing disability in this module – choose 1 learner difference
(you can use the example you focused on in your reflection) describe it with references to
various texts and then critically analyze what you as a teacher need to facilitate, put in place,
rethink and re-imagine in your classroom/school/community to help make inclusion a reality.
Describe what is possible when the principles of inclusive education are applied to this specific
situation.
(800 words max)
The essay must be a maximum 1200 words.
You may include images if referenced.
You must cite the core article, Walton, E. (2011).
You are also expected to draw extensively on the resources and readings in the whole module.
There must be evidence that you have engaged with the module as a whole.

The Walton (2011) reading is the key text. I encourage you to focus on this text. The assessment
rubric (supplied with the assignment on the ‘Assignments’ page) shows how important it is for
you to use the Walton (2001) reading to complete this assignment. I need to see how you have
worked with this text. Other texts like the Salamanca Statement, White paper Six and Guidelines
for Responding to Learner Diversity as well as any other resources should also be used.
