As science progresses, our understanding of psychological disorders improves and the diagnostic manual used by mental health professionals is updated to reflect those changes. Each revision reflects both an improved scientific understanding of the disorder and better methods of treatment. In some cases, disorders are removed from the manual altogether to reflect societal changes more broadly. One classic example is the removal of homosexuality as a psychological disorder. Our scientific understanding improved to the point where we now know that homosexuality is not a disorder but rather a completely healthy individual characteristic.
