This bill was introduced in 2009, 2013 and then reintroduced in 2015 by Representatives John Conyers (D-MI), Bobby Scott (D-VA) and Frederica Wilson (D-FL) and Senator Al Franken (D-Minn.). The reason why I chose this bill is because working directly with patients requires safe patient handling skills. Unfortunately, nurses get injured regularly, which causes them to be out of work temporary or permanently. Moreover, due to the extent of their injuries, their careers in nursing are ended and they change their profession altogether. The bill currently has been referred to the Subcommittee on Workforce Protections. There has been positive out pour of support from many organizations such as American Nurses Association and Association of Perioperative Nurses. Hopefully, the bill will move to the next step to finally become a law.
