Final Project: Information Sheet
- Select one of the authors listed on your short story author sheet.
- Conduct a close reading analysis of at least one short story this author has created. Make sure
your close reading analysis contains the following criteria:
o An original thesis or belief you have about the author’s theme, message or a belief they
communicate in this story.
o 1000-1400 words , double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt
o Textual evidence (use APA or MLA citations for any quotes or paraphrasing)
o An analysis of your thesis with at least three fictional elements
o The use of contexts, and/or genre in your analysis
o A Works Cited list of any texts you use for evidence
Must be originally written unless declared otherwise (see policy rules on AI) - In addition, you must submit an independent research project about this author and their
overall body of work. You may choose from the following types of projects:
o Written Essay
Write an essay that provides a full analysis of the author, their body of work, and the
contexts around their work, with one original thesis or belief you have about the
author’s message, relevancy, or contribution to society.
Your essay must contain the same criteria as your close reading analysis
o Video Essay
Create a video that discusses a full analysis of your chosen author, with one original
thesis, or belief, you have about the author’s message, relevancy, or contribution to
society (consult instructions and sample videos in your Omnivox). Your video essay must:
Be 3-5 minutes
Be organized by your voice narration
Contain footage from at least three works from your author
Use a combination of fictional elements, theme, contexts, and/or genre/subgenre in your analysis
Come with a written script of your narration, with a Works Cited list
Be originally written unless declared otherwise (see policy rules on AI)
o Visual Art
Create an original work of visual art that represents the ideas, values, and themes of
your chosen author (painting, sculpting, video art, etc.) Your work must:
Be physically present on campus or deliverable to your teacher through
Omnivox, if applicable
Come with an artist statement explaining the connection between your work
and your chosen author (half a page, uploaded onto corresponding Omnivox
folder)
Reference (even if only figuratively) the fictional elements, contexts, or genre in
your chosen author’s body of work.
o Fictional story
Create an original fictional story that utilizes similar genre, themes, and fictional
elements as your chosen author. Your story can be any genre you like, as long as it meets
the following criteria:
900-1400 words long, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt
Makes use of and demonstrates understanding of themes, fictional elements,
and contexts that are similar to, or reference, your chosen author.
Belongs to one of the genres covered in our course
Be compatible with Microsoft software for viewable purposes
Your project is due by end of day (11:59pm) of your Week 11 class. Visual art projects that are physically
submitted must be on campus for viewing by the end of your Week 11 class.
Rubric:
o Analysis (makes use of given elements, contexts, meaning, etc to make
inferences and draw conclusions effectively): 20 points
o Organization (follows given criteria, easy to understand): 10 points o Use of
Evidence (makes use of given films, clips, and material): 10 points o
Presentation (Grammar/Clarity): 10 points - Total: 50 points
