sychology 1100 (Dr. Meen): Summary of research article assignment (8%)
Summarize one psychology research journal article from those in the Library electronic reserve (Library → Find books, articles, videos and more…→ in this bar, type in Psychology → in
the next bar, choose OneSearch and the drop menu → choose Course Reserves → then choose
Search → choose: Instructor: Meen, Donald, then → choose Psychology 1100-NW. You’ll see
four articles: choose one you think would be interesting to analyze. If you choose the article by
Klein et al. (2020) analyze only the introduction and Experiment 2a.
In no more than 2 ½ pages, double-spaced type, answer all 13 questions below, following the
outline below. Number each answer, in the order given. Use full sentences where possible.

  1. (½ pt.) Using the APA Style Guide (p. 16), provide the correctly formatted in-text citation for this research article.
  2. (½ pt.) Describe what this research study investigated. (Hint: maybe the title of the article
contains the key words – but DON’T copy out the title word for word!)
Look for the answers to questions 3 to 5 in the first section of the article to begin with. You’ll notice that this section doesn’t have the heading “Introduction”, but that is what it is. You may
need to keep looking in the next section of the articles, too, to find what you need.
  3. (½ pt.) State the Independent Variable or Variables of this research.
  4. (½ pt.) State the Dependent Variable or Variables of this research.
  5. (1 pt.) State the Hypothesis or hypotheses (more than one) of this research.
In the Methods section that follows look for answers to questions 6 – 10.
  6. (½ pt.) Describe the Experimental condition(s). There may be more than one.
  7. (½ pt.) Describe the Control condition(s). There may be more than one.
  8. (½ pt.) Describe the Participants BRIEFLY (Include how many there were, how and
from where they were selected, and any other relevant characteristics of the group.) Note
    they may be called “Subjects”.
  9. (½ pt.) Describe the Materials used by the researchers, BRIEFLY, but include everything the researchers used a. to measure the dependent variable and b. to manipulate the
    independent variable.
  10. (1 pt.) Describe the Procedure followed (Not too much detail!)
Then, in the Results and Discussion sections:
  11. (1 pt.) State what the Results were. (Don’t give the statistical analysis – just the researchers’ conclusions about what they found. Where there is more than one hypothesis,
be sure to report the results as they relate to each.)
  12. (½ pt.) End with whatever important issues they raise in the Discussion section of their
report. These usually concern limitations of their research study, ways to improve upon
it, and interesting new questions that arise from this research. Don’t restate their results
since you’ve already described those. Be sure to put this part largely in your own words.
  13. (½ pt.) Locate the APA Style Guide compiled at Douglas College (Library → Research
Guides → Cite your Sources → “An Introduction to APA Style: A Student Guide: Psychology Department”. Use this guide to provide a correctly formatted reference for your
article. APA style is detailed and particular – be sure you have capitalized, italicized,
punctuated exactly as the guide indicates. Include the Digital Object Identifier (DOI)
which you’ll find near the top of first page of the article, usually near the name of the research journal, its volume and number.
