Instructions:
- In Week 5, choose a partner that is interested in the same topic as you.
The suggested therapeutic topics include: Narrative Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Arts-Based Therapy, Play Therapy, Nature Based (Forest Therapy, Ecotherapy), Emotion Focused Therapy, Animal-Assisted Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, Imago Therapy, The Daring Way (Brene Brown).
You may also pick your own topic with faculty approval. Students should not pick topics that will be covered in class i.e. Solution-Focused Therapy, Strengths-based therapy, Motivational Interviewing or Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.
As soon as you have picked your topic, please let me know as the topics will be selected on a first-come, first-serve basis.
- Determine a strategy for how to best work together as partners. (e.g. how will you share the workload; do you want to create timelines so you can check-in with progress, do you have specific talents that you want to use, is there something specific that you want to learn; what will you do if there is any conflict? Tip: The process for working together is as, if not more important than your outcome. Remember that Learning Outcome #2 for this course is our self-awareness about working in a team!!
Once you have your partner and topic, please sign-up for which week you will present.
- Your assignment is divided into two parts:
- A classroom presentation of a maximum 10 slide powerpoint presentation. (20 marks)
The sub-topics for your powerpoint slides should include:
- Background – briefly, what is this therapy and when and by whom was it developed. What are the key points about this therapy that your classmates should know??
- Who benefits from this therapy?
- How does it work? E.g. key processes
- What is the effectiveness of this therapy?
- Any other key considerations?
The resources for information must be evidenced-based and be referenced in your slide presentation. APA is required.
Tip: if you are planning on using AI as a process of discovery, then you must make full disclosure. AI (Chat GPT) cannot be used to create your slides. Remember plagiarism will result in a zero.
- A demonstration of a practical technique related to the therapeutic approach. (10 marks)
After you present your powerpoint presentation, you will present a practical component of this therapeutic approach that could be potentially used by your classmates as Social Service Workers. This part of the presentation could be a mock demonstration of skill, a worksheet, a video… This part of the presentation must be interactive. After you share your demonstration, please use your creativity to find a way to engage the class in a conversation about your practical technique or perhaps, they could also practice the technique!
Your full classroom presentation should be 30 minutes.
